Chapman’s “legacy is being overwritten in real-time.” He thought about how Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog” was consumed by Elvis Presley......along with endless other examples of the “White male genius” archetype that often receives credit for songs by Black artists.

The thing about Elvis and Hound Dog is that he took a song written for Big Mama Thornton and covered not her version, but a shitty novelty parody that had already erased all hint of what was amazing about her, and he sold 20 times as many records doing it. So many layers of insult added to injury.

It is clearly a song to be sung by a woman to a man. His version never made sense to me.

White musicians have a long historical record of erasing the Black people who originated a song and made it popular.

As a country listener, it is complicated. Pays pay. So there’s that. But, also, *all of the rest*. 😏’Murica…where we can’t have nice things.

The biggest problem I have with the remake is that it's pure trash.
