When you sought a new home, were you aware that the US govt has an idea of what type of home you can rent or buy simply based upon your household income?

PS. The govt doesn't restrict you aiming to rent or buy something it already knows you can't afford.

When you hear the statement "there's an affordable housing shortage", what does it mean to you?

No one can afford a home.

I can't afford a home.

Poor can't afford hones.

If you got this far in my thread, here's the info behind my questions.

Every community in the USA is part of a statistical area where the averages of incomes are calculated and classified into 1 of 4 categories. This is called the "Area Median Income" or AMI.

You have a federal classification.

Double bonus info:

Most Americans consider themselves "middle class" or above. However, the US government may mathematically classify many households as "low income".

This can be traumatic info when a person or family is looking for a new home.

"There's no affordable housing where I live."
