At MSFT, with 15 years of contiguous employment you can leave at age 55 and keep all of your unvested stock awards. A lot of folks use it to retire early.

That is horrible! There needs to be laws in place to prevent that bullshit. We've seen it happen here in Canada as well. It's not ok! How devastating for those people...

MSFT has very good lawyers and they have lots of metrics showing they laid off younger people too.

I speculate that if you had it the data it would show that when looked at in isolation long-time, expensive employees are impacted more compared to younger, cheaper ones.

I am not unbiased here. I and my colleagues were laid off in '19 due to "changing business priorities."

Spoiler: they were not changing. We were just a small team and got re-orged into a group that saw an opportunity to save a buck. After we were dumped they punted our product on to another org.
