Rare disagreement, Marc. The fascists are unquestionably waging war on democracy. A war of choice by aggressors. Defending it out of necessity is also waging war. An involuntary war forced on us by our attackers, but still (metaphorical--at least mostly) war.

Reporters and pundits need to retire the phrase "voting wars." Expanding voting access is not partaking in a "war." The only war is the one *against* democracy by Republicans and their allies. This is not a "both sides" story, so please do not suggest it is.

The obvious analogy is Ukraine, whose options when attacked by Russia were 1) make war in return, in self-defense, or 2) surrender. Self-defense against attack by an aggressor doesn't make you NOT at war.
