Someone asked me how I remember they/them pronouns.

I told them to envision seeing a cell phone sitting on a bench, and not knowing who it belongs to.

Will they come back for the phone? Does it belong to them? Is it theirs? They're probably coming back for it.

From a non native speaker point of view, the they, them, their use appears to be easier than the search for an "appropriate" (whatever that may be) pronoun
