One of the coolest parts in #Thug for me was the symbolism of the roses as the Maverick family. Even tho Maverick waters them, they are dry looking. He tries to take care of his family as best as he can, but they are struggling to thrive in their Garden Heights

After Starr and Seven play basketball after the riots, and scare her parents by their absence, Maverick says to his roses in frustration, “y’all gotta do better than this.” The rose bush looks worse and worse as the book goes on and that tracks with the problems the family face.

Maverick brings the rose bush to the new house at the end and Starr asks if it will be alright. He father says they are “a li’l damaged, but alive. I'm gon’ try something different with them. Putting them in new soil can be like hitting a reset button.” They will thrive in the new soil/community.

The roses also represent how good soil = opportunity, and how those with rich soil are more likely to thrive.
