I’m in Yucatán and it’s so obvious that the poorest people here are Mayan, the very ones who have been here longer than anyone else. I keep wondering, how different does everything need to be in order for everyone to have a standard that allows them to live a life with dignity?

My experience in the Caribbean and South America is very limited, but in Antigua with my co-worker’s family I already saw that lighter skin meant more political and material comfort/power. In Rio, it was a bit more egalitarian - was at a party on the Lagoon, with all shades represented.

Yes, lighter skin usually means higher social and economic status in LatAm. This is one thing that makes it interesting for Mexican Americans like me when we visit. We are the children of the poor, often darker emigrants. But we return with much more economic power. It’s a strange feeling.
