My parents supported a bus that went to Selma from CA. I was taken out of school in Philadelphia because segregation was practiced in my classroom.
I couldn't join my friends' social clubs because my family was Catholic. My father's neighbors were interned during WWII.
History IS in living memory.

And that is ESPECIALLY true of Segregation (including that in CA, NM, TX, etc.), redlining, etc. This permeates so much of our culture in so many insidious ways. Learn it, teach it, and remember it.

And my father's family members were classified as enemy aliens during WWII under EO9066- but that's another story for another time. I have written elsewhere @ my reaction in "Ashcroft Hates Me."

My parents would have gone (the bus left from Davis), but they had to write wills and sign a statement that they understood they could be killed. They had 4 little children at the time and my father was an only child.
