I don't remember having rules about books. My parents also didn't care what I was reading (not obviously anyway). I've been thinking about it for my kids, and once they start to pick their own books, I won't say anything, but I'll make sure to also read it, so we can talk about the different ideas.

This is the approach that I take with my kiddo. If I know that it's a heavy book, I warm them. But then I read alongside to talk through.

My mom didn't let me read comic books though. Somehow, there's a difference between comic book violence and fantasy novel violence...

My mom pushed my brother to read comics. They are typically written at 12th grade level. He hated to read and she wanted him reading above his grade level like us girls.
