I just bought a new Macbook Air M1, and my old Microsoft Word software doesn't work on it (no big loss). So far, Pages is adequate to my word processing needs, but is there another free app y'all recommend for Mac that automatically saves files as .doc or .docx?

I should have said: free or affordable.

Microsoft has an online version of Word that runs in a browser and is free. It does not have all of Word's features, but it might work for you. Google's Word Processor can also save a .docx. Both default to saving your documents in the cloud, but you can save them locally too.

If you would like software that runs locally, instead of on a browser, also check out LibreOffice.
