How much do you think social media is responsible for this political chasm?

Before people largely kept their opinions to themselves. Now hate and ignorance are reaffirmed by like minded hateful ignorant people online.

Creating a defined social sectarian divide.

The chasm always existed, but because there was a lack of easy communication, these political battles were local fights, which were manageable because people generally knew who they were going up against. Now, even local politics can be swallowed up by large waves of ignorant, bigoted individuals.

Look at something like Charlottesville. A relatively peaceful community was turned into a whirlwind of bigotry and racism because a local issue (removing a statue) became enmeshed in a large scale movement (White Christian Fascism).
