To be fair to the journalist, that comment by the Counting Coral president is countered by the quote, later in the article, by local resident Laben Naivalu, who clearly illustrates that the locals are keenly aware.

This is something I struggle with. In so many ways, "truth" is actually a cultural concept. As a white person (and an old one, too) it's hard to let go of what my culture says is true

That's the intoxicating reality behind white supremacy. The entitlement. The privilege. The feeling of having the inherent right to inferiorize people of color and deny us our voices. We're all works in progress, but many white people have a lot of self-reflection and work to do to break free of it.
