Sometimes I get the feeling that drug companies pick the names for new drugs like they’re on Wheel of Fortune - “I’d like five consonants and a “Y”, Pat!”

They actually do try to make the active ingredient hard to remember, and the name brand easy to remember. Just an example: Lipitor/atorvastatin.

Reminds me of an old Three Stooges bit. The boys are making up ingredients to a medicine, for a doctor.
“There’s, ah, Annakennapenna, and some Teheran-tk-tk-tk…
“How you spell zees ‘Teheran-tk-tk-tk?”
“That’s it, write it down!”

Minor anecdote: the 1st combo pill #1 /day for HIV/AIDS, made by Gilead pharma of Menlo Park is called Atripla because it’s 3 drugs: efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir (good example of easy/hard to remember).
Early in, Gilead reached out to my doc for naming ideas. He suggested “tridiva”
