Most of what we buy is synthetic and either won't degrade or will degrade to add unwanted chemicals to our compost piles. Even natural materials are an issue because they may be treated with or dye with chemicals that should not be in our soil

Use of bio degradable plastics should be mandated for some products. They would be more expensive at first but the cost would come down over time, with economies of scale and innovation.
