In the mid 1980’s a plucky federal prosecutor took on the heads of the Five Families (New York mafia) in a massive RICO case. Two of the bosses were murdered before being convicted, but the other three stood trial and lost, and were sentenced to 100 years in prison in 1987.

The heads of two of the families, Genovese and Columbo, received additional 70 year sentences.

Shortly after, in the late 80’s the Russian mob took over the pieces of the Genovese family.

Right around then, a plucky New York real estate developer whose father and mentor both were closely tied to the Genovese family began a financial relationship with the Russians.

You see, he wasn’t paying back his loans from New York banks, so they stopped lending to him.

Ah the 80’s. What a time.

So did Rudy Giuliani go after the Five Families with the full force of RICO behind him back then to bust up organized crime, or did he do it to pave the way for new Mob leadership?

A new Russian leadership?
