Later today, tomorrow at the latest, we will push an update that will change how we handle block lists. Block lists are a resource-intensive feature that affects system-wide performance. You will notice a significant improvement in page loads and the overall speed of the app after the update.

To give you an example. Let's say you have 50 accounts blocked, and you are viewing the explore section. Our backend has to check every spout against your block list before displaying the content. It has to do this within milliseconds. Now multiply that by thousands of users at the same time.

Am I just lucky? I haven’t had the need to block anyone here.

Oh, so you interpret the concept of blocking an account in absolute terms. I would have implemented it by having the blocking user not seeing any replies on their timeline (a passive feature) from the user being blocked. But I wouldn't have extended this to the explore section (an active feature).

Blocking isn’t only about ending a convo. Sometimes a block is used when someone is fearful of their safety or to otherwise protect privacy. So if I block for those reasons, I wouldn’t want them seeing anything I post & wouldn’t want random reminders of them when looking for new people in explore.
