Why are freaking *chess competitions* gendered in the first place?

Probably for the same reason we gender inanimate objects and things like computer-generated voices. (Because it's familiar despite it being an example of why the concept of gender, and especially the gender-binary, is fabricated to assign gender roles, reinforcing harmful stereotypes).

But I will add some context here. Second-wave feminism saw these groups, created by cis women, as a win. Because chess has been predominantly cis-men, it left many women without the opportunity to even play in tournaments. https://www.si.com/more-sp...

BUT, the world championship tournaments are not gendered. These two Women's Chess orgs were explicitly created to address women/girls access to tournaments and also challenge themselves in March Madness-style tournaments. Women are still significantly underrepresented, especially trans women.

It makes no sense to exclude trans-women from women's tournaments. Trans-women are significantly underrepresented. And it doesn't make sense to deny them the opportunity to challenge themselves in these formatted tournaments. The style of tournaments turns some women players off completely.
