Just six months after my mother died, I’m on Day 5 of sitting by my father in hospice. They’re keeping him comfortable, out of pain, but I’m surprised he’s made it this long since the cancer came back—and it came back fast. I guess this is all I have to spout about, really.

When it’s just us in here my mind fills the chairs and sofa in my father’s hospice suite with my brother, my granny, my sister, my mother. Then Dad, asleep for days, will laugh, or say “uh huh,” and I think maybe I really am part of a family gathering I can’t see.
