I worked for Border for 13 years, leaving in 2008. It was hard to watch the company I loved being handled by people who didn't appreciate the singular nature of a shop selling art. We were directed to approach merchandising and handselling as if we were trying to move heads of lettuce. Disaster.

It's definitely sad, many times I would honestly not even buy anything, just browse for a while and look at everything

The relaxed atmosphere was definitely part of the appeal. And the employees. When I started, my coworkers were usually graduate students studying Russian Lit, or conspiracy nuts elbow deep in foo fighters & microwaves. ❤️ All fascinating, articulate, thoughtful people. Not part-time drones. So sad.
