So... uh. In response to a meme about how Europeans had somehow 'forgotten how to bathe' since Roman times, I said I'd need to see some references to believe it. Guess that touched some sore notes. Anyway, it's a popular myth that Europeans were dirty and unwashed.

You can see in this article that after the Roman Empire public bathhouses remained popular. In some cases bathhouses became places where diseases spread and they became unpopular.

There is still a long history and documentation of the bathing habits of Europeans. There are cases where certain religious leaders came out against bath houses specifically and mixed-sex bathing... bathing was still a common practice. It was just public bathhouses that were disfavored.

So if you see somebody posting some meme about Europeans having to be taught HOW to BATHE, without any accreditation or scholarly backing... please be mindful that some people are easily fooled into believing things that aren't true because it 'sounds' authoritative. Historians need to use sources.
