Reading up on conspiracy theorists - anyone who's more subject to anxiety, disenfranchisement and fear use CT as a way to comfort themselves by identifying a convenient scapegoat making the world seem more controllable and straightforward. The world being uncontrollable is too hard to digest.

Think you’ll find this an interesting interview with Nafees Hamid- research focuses on the psychology of radicalisation and social fragmentation in Western countries. There is a particular section describing Trumps ‘will be wild’ tweet as an extremist activation call.

Oh yeah it’s definitely across all cultures- and probably open internet access means these things can spread faster in western democracies.
That said Hamid worked on religious fundamentalism and describes being allowed in to interview Islamic extremists for his research
