The streets were taken over by powerful floodwaters. The winds showed no mercy to streetlights, electric poles, and buildings. Piercing screams and cries from the townspeople filled in the air. When it was all over and the sun rose on Sept. 9, the Galveston the people knew back then was long gone.

Billed as the Wall Street of the South because of its economic and industrial prowess, Galveston faced an uncertain future. Its status as Texas' premier city would be usurped by Houston some 50 miles to the north. The 1900 Storm is the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
