Conservatives were worried that free education “may be producing a positively dangerous class situation” by raising the expectations of working-class students.

Yes. I was in college when this happened. Federal student loans with very low interest rates were easily available my first two years, and then they weren’t. I was panicking. My friends were panicking. With a full class load, I took on a job as an RA for lodging and food, and worked up to 39 hours

I should point out that when he was elected President, he brought these conservative educational thoughts with him, which is what I got caught up in. A number of my friends dropped out.

The thought on education was that the country needed more workers and less managers. So the rich families’ children could be the managers and the poor people’s kids could be the workers. Workers that didn’t need an education.
