I'm reading the excerpt from the new Mitt Romney book and I see that Mitch McConnell is one of many people in D.C. who can't do grade-school math. When McConnell said this, Republicans had a 53-47 Senate majority. Add 4 D senators to that and Rs would still have had a majority, 53-51.

No, that's not how it works. The Senate hasn't always had 100 senators - it's always had two per state. In the decades before Alaska and Hawaii became states, there were 48 states and 96 senators. If we add two states, there'll be 104 senators.
