Arisaema dracontium

I’m excited that we’ll a few pots of Green Dragon at the #HydePark #Chicago #garden fair 9/23, though I’m afraid people won’t like them because the pots will probably just have corms. Green Dragon grows in moist rich woodlands with dappled light. 1/n

Green Dragon's flower is the dragon’s tongue (a long tapering whip emerging from the spadix) and the leaf is a dragon's wing. It tends to be solitary though the corms will split to grow a new plant nearby. The flower blooms May-June then turns into a large cluster of bright red berries. 2/n

Green Dragon is toxic for mammals to eat (we are mammals!) but the berries are food for birds like red-breasted nuthatches, ruby-crowned kinglets, and wood thrushes. Aris means arum family. Aema means blood. Dracontium means of the dragon. Green dragon changes sex depending on the weather. end/n
