I've never read a single one of her novels. I admire Toni Morrison as a writer and a Black woman but the downtrodden and depressing Black narrative, no matter how well its written, with little exception, do I read.

The Bluest Eye was Toni Morrison’s first novel. If you’ve read any of her other novels, such as Beloved, how do you think it compares?

For many people, historical fiction is how they learn our history and gain empathy. But I get the effects of oversaturation can be depressing.

I don't disagree. I just find a lot of it unreadable. If other people don't they should absolutely expose themselves to different people's stories.

Beloved almost broke me (for sad personal reasons I will keep to myself)…

And I could not deal with that. I do understand that some stories need to be told, and I believe in that. But I do not need to read them all.
