Fall #whatsintheyard is a bit sparse after the relentless heat and drought in Austin this year. First up - not a bloom but the resultt of one - seed heads of Clematis texensis, Scarlet Clematis. It's native to the Edwards Plateau, also known as the Texas Hill Country. #gardening #nativeplants

Next, is Palafoxia hookeriana known as Sand Palafox. These plants don't even sprout until well into the summer and usually cna handle heat and drought - but this year they needed extra water to survive. The leaves have a sticky surface that disuades insects. #gardening #nativeplants #centraltexas

The drought really hurt the Liatris blooms this year. They are almost non-existent & those that you do see are small and sad. This is a tough plant that has had no extra water. Not sure which species we have here as there are many, all with confusing similar appearances. #gardening #nativeplants

This tangled ball of stems is Agalinis heterophylla or Prairie False-foxglove. It's almost invisible until it starts to bloom, being mostly green stems and very few leaves. The bright pink foxglove flowers pop out of the background. Grows in very rocky sparse soil. #gardening #nativeplants

The Gregg's Mistflower is a spring to fall butterfly magnet. Monarchs love them. It's an easy plant that is also relatively drought tolerant. I love it's purple-blue tint and frilly little petals. Leaves are a fun lime green. Part of the Aster family - Conoclinium greggii #gardening #nativeplants

Last is the Gray Globemallow - Sphaeralcea incana native to TX, NM and AZ. I call it the Halloween Flower because is has these cheery bright orange flowers at the end of October. The evergreen leaves are a woolly gray-green. Extremely drought & heat tolerant. #gardening #nativeplants #centraltexas
