There are many possible outcomes at play here. Yes, many have suggested Kevin could be replaced with Matt Gaetz or someone worse, but I honestly don't see Matt getting the position given how he isn't on good terms with a good chunk of the House GOP.

The problem is nobody on the GOP side seems to want the job and remember there are a lot of vulnerable Republicans in heavy Biden districts who likely don't want to suffer through a McCarthy 2.0. Never mind the fact there is a good chance Gaetz himself could be ousted for ethics violations.

Don't be surprised if some moderate Republicans try to work out a deal with Democrats to get Hakeem Jefferies or at least a House Republican who won't create an even bigger circus. Just imagine if they decide to go with Liz Cheny as Kevin's replacement.

David Frum raises an excellent point that while Democrats did lose the House in 2022, the Republicans didn't really win it either.

The way the media is framing this as a failure of politics or somehow the fault of the Democrats is just absurd this is all entirely on the GOP. Kevin sold his soul for that Speaker's Gavel and made a ton of promises he knew deep down he couldn't keep, and this was the inevitable end result.

Who becomes the new speaker is still up in the air but lets not ignore that the House Democrats could have a very strong hand here.
