When I examine newborns, I gently hold on to one of their hands. This reduces their "moro reflex" and decreases their distress during their exam. As I was examining a baby this morning I realized that in my career I've held over 10,000 baby hands. This is my most proud obscure fact. #pediatrician

I do the same when I start echocardiograms on babies, stops them startling and avoids the parents thinking I’m freezing them with the jelly.

And it’s just nice to do it, look them in the eye and say hello
