The salary system for House reps needs to be overhauled. I suggest the following: An annual housing allowance of $36k ($3k/mo) to help offset the need to rent an apartment in the DC area. They meet on average of 160 days per year (WTF).

Granted some of them do work more than just while in session so let’s say they work almost half the time they’re not in session (extremely generous of us), 100 more days for a total of 260 days. we’ll say this is an annual Constituency Support Allowance of $60k.

That comes to $96k in allowances so far. The rest should be an hourly wage (timeclock certified) at approx $50/hr over the minimum wage.

All of this should be tied to an annual cola that is equal to that given all other government workers/military and Social Security recipients and included in minimum wage increases.

They have not worked an average of 8hrs/day in session since 2000. The 115th Congress 2017-18, latest year in available statistics) they averaged 4.1hrs/day in session. But I think they were in session approx. 195 days that year.

If they continue this trend they will never meet their current salary.

I’m sure the GAO can do a better breakdown then I did on the fly but as long as a percentage of their income is based on actual hours in session and tied to the minimum wage It would be progress.

No more voting themselves raises. Increase minimum wage and Cola to achieve that. Also, their pay is not guaranteed during shutdowns.

P.S.: The minimum wage should also apply to all workers regardless of # of hours or type of job worked. /…end

While I completely adore teachers and all they did for me I think you may be selling you and your fellow teachers short by comparing yourselves to representatives of the US House. I don’t think 90% of them put in the work you would expect from them. Still we can balance their CSA and hourly wages.
