In a state of fear, our nervous system is over-reactive to all sensory input b/c the primitive/survival brain takes over. It’s a natural protective mechanism but shouldn’t be our 24/7. Consuming fear-mongering media wrecks the nervous system & makes it challenging to connect to the thinking brain.

Yes, fear literally dumbs us down by taking the prefrontal cortex (executive functions) offline. The psychology of right-wing authoritarians is intensely studied by Karen Stenner and beautifully explained by Teri Kanefield. Unfortunately, none is yet here, but I still hope.
