Regardless of the context -- employment, family, criminal justice, professional regulation -- do not try to address substance use without first seeking to understand and support the person (to the extent desired) dealing with the pain that substance use is being used to dull.

This is the part we miss. It’s about individuals and their life story.

There are thousands living among those with addictions who have much lesser impact addictions or very rarely, no addictions at all.
It’s about the INDIVIDUAL. If we don’t see them, help is severely limited.

Any other approach will be ineffective at best, and more likely, counterproductive. A person using substances to address distress is not helped by adding more distress.

Neither will forced treatment, which is distressful in and of itself.
