According to Forbes, 74% of US adults read at or below 6th grade level. https://www.forbes.com/sit...

The article says 54%, which is still outrageously high. Few people read enough challenging, extended material beyond their school years to maintain high levels of reading ability. We should all aim higher—-my goal is 100 books a year, minimum,

FYI the article says 54%, not 74%. Still dismal, but significant difference.

When attending 12-step meetings 30 years ago, I was shocked how badly professionals, counselors & teachers would read out loud. I believe it.

I hope someone analyzes the data to break it down by state... finding might be interesting!

I'm not sure why the article references the Barbara Bush Foundation when the NCES has been collecting data for years.
Here's a link where you can check by state & county.

I was once asked to leave a public swimming pool because the rules were "appropriate swimming attire must be worn". I pointed out that the sign meant "while swimming" and I was fully clothed because I wouldn't be swimming, just supervising my kids. They threatened to call the police! 🙄 #literacy

My daughter teaches 7th grade ELA. She got called in to the Asst. P's office because she took an extra 2 weeks so she could finish a non-fiction book with her students vs a few chapters. She was anxious that she wouldn’t be able to cover subject matter before they tested. It’s all about the test.

You can imagine the frustration they must feel attempting to read an adult book, newspaper or magazine.
So they don’t.

How sad, I hate it that people struggle they need reading in their everyday life; whether it is work or personal life.
