Random factoid.
On the left is Captain Frederick Goetz, commander of Hook and Ladder Company No. 16, standing outside the "old" firehouse at 62nd Place and Dorchester. (Chicago History Museum DN-0064004) #Chicago #HydePark #Firehouse #Fireman 1/n

He laid the cornerstone for the "new" firehouse on the right in 1915. I'd taken a picture because I like collecting the Chicago "device" and I liked the fancy brickwork. 2/n

Goetz had been working from that firehouse since before annexation in 1889. It was where the volunteer fire department of Hyde Park was based in the very early days. I guess the NEW new firehouse is the one at Dorchester and 67th Street.

It turns out Captain Goetz was a hero. According to Cindy Marchessault, he was a survivor of the horrific Cold Storage Fire at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The building providing refrigeration of food as well as an indoor ice rink caught fire. Three civilians and at least 15 firemen perished.
