My mom, who got divorced in the 1970s, was very aware about women getting credit. It blew her away how easy it was for me later on.

For everyone who thinks that Mike Johnson reference to 18th Century values is not relevant…

Women in America did not get the right to build credit/get credit cards in their own name without their husband co-signing until the early 1970s (post Nixon)

Think about that for a while!

I was divorced in 1998. Called J.C. Penney to remove my ex-husband’s name from the credit card that I had opened. They said they needed HIS permission.

Cancel it then, I said.
“We need his permission to do that.”

My ex is a reasonable person so it was done. I never set foot in that store again.

I remember fighting for it when I was divorced in 1975. Even our shared bank didn't want to open an account for me only. I persevered and I am still with that SAME bank today. It's been a long hard road ladies, we can't go back now.

Good for you for fighting and demanding that the bank EVOLVE.
