I was there.

I was in SF during the height of the AIDS epidemic.

I was at SF General and saw lesbians doing for their gay brothers what even some doctors and nurses wouldn't.

Those lesbians were often the only family those men had.

i was only a kid then but i read a heart wrenching book, Borrowed Time, about the AIDS epidemic of the 80's. It really put a human face on a terrible time of our history.

I was in SF at that time, not at SF General but I did see what you describe, and mourned friends, neighbors, co-workers while the Reagan admin pretended nothing was happening.

I was in San Diego and took care of my beloved friends. Ran errands, did their laundry, cooked meals, held their hands and sobbed copious amounts of tears when they passed. I remember sitting on the edge of my friend Jimmy’s bed after he passed. I stared at his young face forever frozen at 27.

I lost friends, classmates, neighbors and co-workers during that time. It was surreal sometimes to see someone look perfectly fine one day, then by the end of a month start looking ravaged and skeletal.
