Who should lead - the old or the young?

Here's a radical idea. How about everyone?

Here's why...

Years ago, when married and semi-forced to play a role in organized religion, the church was discussing building a community. The community would include a mixture of houses and buildings that support a growing community.

As planning normally goes, the church needed to get input from members. In-person sessions were scheduled and all generations were encouraged to attend.

It was a lively discussion. Valid points were made by all.

But one thing struck me as a WTF moment. Older members had a contention about a plot of land. They argued they needed a cemetery because they needed somewhere to be buried.

Yes, you read that correctly.

This community was about building a much-needed space for future generations. This community was going to bridge gaps that had otherwise been missing in that area by bringing much-needed amenities to Black people.

And the older members were not concerned about the legacy they'd leave their future generations, but about where they'd be housed after death.

And that's how leadership can be when it's led by one group.

Some people are so singularly focused on their own personal gains that they'll do whatever to achieve said gains without any concern for anyone else. And sometimes, everyone else be damned.

Sometimes that's intentional. Sometimes it's simply ignorant. Sometimes people can't see beyond themselves because they've never taken the opportunity to learn or experience anything beyond themselves.

So how do we combat this?

By giving everyone a seat at the table. By allowing everyone to lead.

And no, simply because you feel called to lead doesn't mean you should lead.

Leadership is not a right, but a privilege. And when you abuse that privilege, you should be fired.

Leadership should not be based on seniority. Your seniority also should not be the qualification for you to retain your position, especially when you're simply acting as a bottleneck to prevent more qualified people from leading.

Research has proven that diverse companies are more successful than their counterparts.

The fact that we fail to see this in government confirms why we're exactly where we are presently. And it isn't lost on me that it's by design.

So if you're qualified to lead then you should. And it shouldn't matter what age you are, as long as you're an adult.

And here's an even more radical thought.

When you solve problems for the most disenfranchised, everyone benefits. So when you make life easier for Black and Indigenous disabled women, including trans women, the world will be a much better place. For EVERYONE.

But y'all aren't ready for that.
