Startups are seen as a beacon of hope for marginalized people who are burned out from corporate America. However, most times startups prove to be considerably worse because everything you experience in corporate America can run unchecked in startups.

Startups are also overwhelmingly white. And because of this, you see a weird catch-22.

Job openings tend to be on opposite ends of the spectrum.

You see the JDs that want talent right out of college. Sometimes the pay for those is great BTW. Most times that comes with a bias of targeting specific colleges.

And then you see the other end, wanting an expert. Most times it flags that the culture doesn't support development because they don't have strong onboarding and on-the-job training is nonexistent. They essentially want you to be able to do the job as soon as you start.

But what's interesting about both is that preferential treatment is given to white men, and some white women, regardless of whether they're qualified to do the job.

The requirements that apply for everyone else magically disappear for them.

So the marginalized candidates who have the experience, transferable skills, or can self-teach themselves through many roles (because life doesn't give them any other option) are often overlooked.

Or worse, they're brought in but never welcomed or accepted.

And if you're lucky or unlucky, depending on perspective, you get front-row seats to the inner workings.

You get to see the shitshow of white men failing upward. You quickly understand who has room to make endless mistakes and who is micromanaged.

You see who gets praise and promotions based on potential...

And who is told they need XYZ when they want to do something else or move up.

You see who is allowed to make decisions that affect nearly everyone else, whether it's the best decision or not...

And who is pacified when they raise valid concerns or suggestions.

It can be quite the mindfuck at times.

And the question remains if corporate America isn't for us and startups don't want us, then what IS for us?

That question is rhetorical BTW.
