Ages ago I asked about vehicle nomenclature in USA / Australia. We use the same words for completely different vehicles.eg

Trucks,
Tractors,

At the time I could not remember what we used to call utes (USA trucks) in South Australia when I was a child.
It was buckboards.
Anyone else remember them?

Buckboards referred to boards on the side of the vehicle and sometimes the rear. Because if you were on them, they bucked. Ute is short for utility vehicle. Quite different.

Forgot to thank you for this Roger.
It made sense of the name.
Wikipiedia was all about horse drawn vehicles & I was lost until I found the other site.
Ours definitely was wooden as you describe.
Clear memories of how proud Dad was to have it, & when we brought the telephone lines across the farm.

I have faint memories of Dad explaining all of this to me as a little tacker. Wrapped up in a rich tradition of history and language.

Ahhh, yes.

"little tacker" is part of it, isn't it.
I went back to g'parents farm 10 years ago and found memories all over the abandoned place including a tyre he had mended (on the "jinker"?) ... rubber tyre strips wired onto metal rim ... not sure if this will work.

I have to ask. Was that on the other side of the Goyder Line, by any chance?
