IjeomaOluo on IG: I just can't with people - especially people here in the US, Canada or Europe - who keep talking about being sensitive to "both sides" of the "conflict" in Gaza as if we're talking about an argument between friends and not genocide and ethnic cleansing.

On one side we have people who are under active violent oppression, are locked in an open air prison, have been denied basic rights, including food and water, and are currently being slaughtered by the thousands.

The other side of *that* issue is the state of Israel that is currently imprisoning them and slaughtering them, and those who support those actions (like the US government).

This doesn't mean that there aren't *other* issues that surround this one. Or that we can't discuss those issues.

But when we're talking active genocide and violent oppression happening right now, there's the side that's against that and then there's the side that's for that.

To insert other issues and concerns (such as how protests for ceasefires or the phrase "Free Palestine" makes you personally - a person not at risk of being bombed with your entire family tonight - feel), as the "other side" instead of additional issues to consider is a dangerous distraction at best

and the devaluing of Palestinian life (while reducing genocide to an issue of ideological difference) at worst.

This doesn't mean that your pain or fear is invalid or that it can't be discussed.

But when you weaponize that pain and fear to silence, distract, weaken or slow the actions of those calling for a ceasefire or the liberation of Palestinians it is a violent exercise of privilege and it's revealing a lot about your personal biases and bigotries.
