Yesterday would have been Dad’s 87th birthday.

Along with practically everyone else that knew him, I miss him.

The ‘pull my finger’ gag
Arguing over who got the check
Baseball discussions
Seeing him smile when family was together
His embellishment of stories, even if it bore no basis in truth

He loved road trips. Especially when he got older and wasn’t the one doing the driving.

I slammed the brakes to take the attached picture and told him to get out so we could take this picture.

“How? It’s just us two…”

Yes, I explained a ‘Selfie’ on the shoulder of an interstate highway.

A wicked sense of humor. An appreciation of thoughtful sarcasm and the blunt force of a fart joke.

Laughed loudly. No embarrassment.

He was as comfortable in a Brooks Brothers suit as he was in khaki shorts and a horrible Hawaiian shirt.

He had ‘formal’ slippers and ‘going out’ slippers.

He loved my mother and it broke his heart when she passed away suddenly years ago.

Yes, he remarried. It was and still is complicated.

He loved his kids and even moreso his grandkids. Wore the silly hat for birthday parties, sang loudly and quietly slipped cash.

He didn’t like attention on himself. At a birthday dinner for him, I was sitting next to him. He grabbed the waiter and I heard him whisper “if anyone comes out of that door with a cake and singing, I will rip your nuts off and hand them to you”.

There was no singing/no cake.

Why post the day after? Why not on his birthday?

His memory is more to me than on one day a year.

A Final Story:
My daughter had a screenprint business. He LOVED hearing her talk about it.

He also loved dirty jokes.

While in hospice, he told the story to her of taking a trip to Nantucket. He’d seen a t-shirt that said “I Am The Man From Nantucket” and found it outrageously funny.

I had to Explain The Joke on the drive home.

The next day, she made him a t-shirt with that saying on it, and several others that said “I Know The Man From Nantucket”.

She gave them to him and he laughed. A lot. Probably his Last Good Laugh. He then handed out the other shirts to hospice nurses.

Repeatedly told the story every time he gave one out and pointed at his granddaughter.

He was buried in khaki trousers, a bad Hawaiian shirt and that t-shirt underneath.

He’s probably still giggling his ass off about it, wherever he is.

He acted pissy when there was a chance that we’d have to take a different route and bypass Winslow.

“But…but…I thought we were….”

FINE. We’ll risk construction zones and backups so that we (YOU) can go through Winslow and get a picture.
