I've tried for a long time to find a clear explanation for why I don't like using words like Jew. That I try instead to say Jewish people, Black people, undocumented people etc. In the end, it's simple. It's a lot harder to dehumanize a group when you put the "people" in there.

I'm not judging or directing anybody else to change how they talk, especially how people who are part of the vulnerable demographics talk about themselves. I'm just saying that's why I make the choice, even though that choice is occasionally cumbersome

Grew up in the heart of the local Jewish community & have an ex and children who consider themselves secular Jews. Yet, like you, I turn myself inside out avoiding the word. Always worried if this is a latent bias - do I consider the word itself derogatory?
Perhaps a support group is in order.
