Update on the Grindavik situation #Iceland # 15

The situation is a bit unclear ATM. On the one hand, earthquake activity - frequency & magnitude - has slowed down since yesterday. OTOH ground inflation, due to the influx of magma into the sill, is increasing.

With an estimated 50 cbm/s the rate is substantial. This means that more magma is entering the scene, especially north of Mount Thorbjon and close to the Svartsengi power plant and the Blue Lagoon. This is almost exactly the same place where the unrest initially started several days ago.

It´s a bit further from Grindavik, which is of course a good thing, but at the same time dangerously close to the power plant, which is the main source of warmth and energy on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Experts think that the likelihood of an eruption is still rather high, not least because the intensity of the magma accumulation close to the surface is quite a thing.
