Good evening from West Valley City, where I'm at the election night event for Republican Celeste Maloy.

She's the favorite to win tonight's special election in Utah's 2nd Congressional District to replace Rep. Chris Stewart, who retired from Congress earlier this year.

Maloy is the favorite to win tonight because the 2nd District is just over 50% Republican.

If Democrat Kathleen Riebe is going to pull the upset, she'll need big turnout from Salt Lake, Davis and Tooele Counties coupled with low turnout in the southern parts of the state.

Don't get worked up about early turnout numbers.

For instance, 49.3% of voters in Piute County have returned their ballots compared with 28.3% from Salt Lake County.

There are only 946 voters in CD2 from Piute County compared to more than 120,000 in Salt Lake County.

Well, that was quick.

Maloy declared victory, and Riebe conceded before 9 pm.

Maloy says she'll be sworn in next week.

There's not much time to celebrate, though. Candidate filing for the 2024 election is in just 42 days, and there are already several Republicans considering challenging her.
