Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1903, she encountered the segregated racism of the province in 1943 when she attempted to see a movie in the downstairs seating area of the Roseland Theatre.

Arrested with her son, she fought the charges and challenged the legal justification of the theatre's segregation.

She was unsuccessful and had to pay damages to the theatre's owners. The experience motivated her to establish The Clarion, a newspaper.

This was Nova Scotia's first black-owned newspaper & it became an important voice in challenging racial segregation in Nova Scotia.

The 1st edition of her paper broke the story of Viola Desmond, who also challenged the segregation of the Roseland Theatre.

In 1952, Best started The Quiet Corner, a radio show, which aired until 1964. From 1968-1975, she was a columnist for The Pictou Advocate.

In 1977, she was awarded the Order of Canada & in 2011, a stamp was released to honour her. She died on July 24, 2001 in New Glasgow.
