Today on Thanksgiving I reflect on the first genocide that occurred on the soil beneath me. I was once part of the Cherokee Nation. White men wanted the ancestral land of the Cherokee people and in 1828 gold was discovered in Dahlonega, Georgia (roughly 20 miles north). The Georgia Gold Rush began.

White men took what they wanted. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson drafted The Indian Removal Act. In 1838, the Cherokee people were forcibly removed from Georgia. More than 4,000 died on the Trail of Tears, approximately 25% of the Cherokee people.
