I remember this & my family discussing the Black dairy farmers we knew...

I sometimes want white people to experience, just for a moment, the constant restraint Black Americans, particularly American Freedmen, exercise when engaging with them on even the seemingly most benign topics.

Your point adds much needed context.

However, based on his body of writing, I don't think that Harriot's aim is ever to make things more palatable to white people. His use of "fun" here lines up with the sarcastically biting, caustic approach to explaining real history that he usually uses.

point.
Sarcasm is still comedy, and comedy has always been a palatable veneer for Black people/American Freedmen(US).
