I think too many people think ending systemic racism is just voting. It's like you think because you do the "right" thing one day out of the year, that you're somehow not one of the bad ones.

You think that "I Voted" sticker somehow absolves you.

But ending systemic racism is a daily conscious action. It's leaning into the uncomfortable and unknown. It's calling yourself out and; hopefully, being in a community where others are calling you in at the same time.

It's learning, growing, changing, moving forward.

It's not having all the answers but having plenty of questions, doing your own research, and surrounding yourself with people you can observe and listen to. Not interject, but actually learn from. Not get defensive either, but truly reflect on what they tell you.

People think going for the big goals wins the fight. Yes and no. Because if you fail to conquer the small things, are you even rightly equipped to handle the big things? And the fact that who you vote for isn't known gives too many the privilege to say one thing and do another.

So what are some small goals to work on?

- When you hear something new, Google it instead of expecting someone to do the emotional labor of educating you
- Correctly spell and pronounce people's names
- Don't ask them to give you a nickname to make your life easier

- When you know, use the right pronoun
- When you don't, share yours and ask for theirs
- Or, when in doubt, refer to them as nonbinary until you know
- If your circle looks like and sounds like you, expand it
- And just expand it anyway
- Decenter yourself

- Read a book
- Or article
- The goal is to learn
- Question everything
- Listen to those most affected by the issues
- Observe the inner workings of your job or grocery store or [insert any public place] and call out what doesn't look right

- Advocate for others
- Not center yourself in their fight, but advocate for them
- Protect and shield them, especially if you have the privilege to do so

And so much more.

What are some small goals you're working on?
