Sometimes ago, someone said that when a person has a strong opinion about something, it's more than an opinion; it's part of who they are, and when faced with a different opinion, the ego goes into defensive mode to protect the rest of the personality from something unknown.

This is true, we covered it in my psych classes. To discuss the opinion, it has to be separated from the person so they too can see it less subjectively as part of themselves. God forbid we trigger the ego. Lol!
