When I had kidney stones, I stopped to take a shower before letting my husband take me to the ER. When they asked me my pain I told them it was a solid 8.5, maaaybe a 9. She said, "Are you sure?" I replied that I figured 10 should be reserved for something that was actively killing me.

I hate the pain scale.
My daily pain would paralyze most.
I have to get my pain in control and then they ask what it is. I now remember what it was in the morning so I don't have to break my control for them later.

Absolutely. When I was recently in the ER for abdominal pain and was asked what my pain level was, I responded in a way I had never done before. I said that I didn’t know. After everything was better, I realized that I had been using pain coping techniques I used while giving birth unmediated. 10/10

I was so involved in pain management but knew I had to respond to their questions, so I just said I don’t know. If it happens again I’ll try to remember that not being able to answer means it’s the worst. There’s no room left to consider the degree of pain.

Husband will ask my pain level. I'll shrug and say 4-5. He looks at me and says, "So like 8-9 to other ppl."

He's prolly not wrong, but it would be easier to have a scale for chronic pain people or like a 0-15.

My husband tells me the same thing. And I agree with the 1 - 15 scale.

I think this is often true of people with chronic emotional pain too.

My mom was like this. If she said ouch, you and I would be on the floor screaming in agony.
